Ports of Auckland is investigating with a electricity socket so seeing cruise liners could plug in and receive their electricity.

At present, generators operate off their fuel oil while in port.

Port spokesman Matt Ball reported that produced other forms of contamination and greenhouse gas emissions.

“What we are exploring is plugging in cruise ships so they can use power in the grid rather than being required to use their generators.

“We’d like to reduce the emissions butt with the vent. Therefore, if the boats might be plugged in, in an ideal world they would turn their engines off and there would be no emissions locally.”

However he said large container stores and liners used a lot of consequently trapping them in the mains and power would need a great deal of investment.

Mr Ball was expected to be finished by April and said that a feasibility study was commissioned.

Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson explained: “We have set ourselves the goal of becoming carbon neutral from 2025 and using zero emissions by 2040.

“This work will support both those goals. Initially we will examine the feasibility of providing alternative power only for cruise ships, but we aim to expand this across the whole port longer term.”

A second option, following plug-ins, would use very low sulphur fuel or a shore-based generator burning gas, which might be cleaner than combustion of a ship’s fuel oil.
